Greetings lovelies! Hi, it’s Emmy. Welcome back to another “You Made What?!” Today I’ll be making a candy, but it’s a candy that has some…some interesting qualities, because it’s a candy recipe that came from prison. So, I found this book called Prison Ramen, and I heard about this from NPR. So, it’s stories and recipes that use
instant ramen and all kinds of other things that can get from the commissary
that inmates have made. So, one of the recipes that caught my attention was this one — and it’s called Hard-Time Candy. And there’s only two ingredients: Kool-Aid and hot sauce. So come with me and I’ll show you what I did. So, first begin by mixing up some Kool-Aid: so, a cup of sugar to a packet of Kool-Aid. Mix well….
then take three tablespoons of your Kool-Aid mixture and add two drops of hot sauce — and I’m using Sriracha. So the instructions say that you’re supposed to work this together until it forms a candy — which it didn’t really work for me — it kind of just got dry and crumbly; but maybe it’ll work for you — try it. So I ended up using about a half teaspoon of hot sauce…and got something that kinda came together like this. And
then I just used a disposable contact lens case and then I just packed some
of the mixture in there to form some kind of candy. There you go! Orange hot sauce candy. All right. So here are the finished candies. And, I did have to make a couple of changes…. So, according to the directions, I should keep flipping and pressing it, until it forms a hard, nickel-sized lump — but it never came to a lump — so I kept adding hot sauce — more than… WAY more than the two drops it said; and
it still didn’t come up to anything, so…enough jibber-jabbering, let’s give these a taste! Itadakimasu! Hmm! Aha! Not too bad, I guess…. So, very, very sweet; they have a kind of crumbly, sandy texture; got a little bit of spice but not too spicy; and because I used Sriracha, it has a bit of garlic flavor in there; and, yeah it’s tinged with orange, so it tastes a litle bit like orange Tang, or orange Kool-Aid. Not too bad, but I feel like I missed something on this recipe. I…
like I did something wrong — like it should be cooked or something so it looks and feels more like a candy,
rather than kind of the crumbly sugary thing. So they remind a little bit of some of the candies I had in my Emmy Eats Mexico videos which are a little bit spicy, sweet, fruity, and a little bit sour — yeah. Kind of similar. That’s Hard-Time Candy — you let me know in the comments below if you want to see more recipes of this…. All right. I hope you guys enjoyed that; I hope you guys learned something; don’t forget to like, comment and subscribe. And I shall see you in my next video. Toot-a-loo! Take care! Bye! It is a Cold Weather Ration. It’s Menu 6:
seafood chowder, and it comes in this white bag so it camouflages with the snow!
