WITH A LOOK INSIDE
MARICOPA COMMUNITY COLLEGES, THIS
IS MARICOPA NOW. HERE ARE SOME OF THE
STORIES: SEE HOW THIS STUDENT’S BIG DREAM WON
MARICOPA’S BIG PITCH; GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS,
A NEW RESOURCE CENTER IS GIVING STUDENTS THE
OPPORTUNITY TO TURN THEIR DREAMS INTO REALITY;
PLUS, THIS FORMER MARICOPA COLLEGES CULINARY STUDENT
PUTS HIS SKILLS TO THE TEST ON A POPULAR FOOD NETWORK
COOKING COMPETITION. AND THERE’S SO MUCH MORE ON THIS
EDITION OF MARIOCPA NOW. WELCOME TO OUR SHOW. THANKS FOR JOINING US IN
STUDIO A AT SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
I’M YOUR HOST KIM GOETZ. ONE OF THE MAIN OBJECTIVES
OF COLLEGE IS TO GUIDE STUDENTS ALONG THE
PATH THAT LEADS TO THEM FULFILLING THEIR DREAMS. ONE ESTRELLA MOUNTAIN
COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT WHO WITH THE SUPPORT OF
SO MANY IS NOW WORKING HIS BUSINESS THANKS
TO HIS BIG PITCH. RENE BLATTE REPORTS. LOOK CLOSELY AT THE TIRES
AND YOU’LL APPRECIATE THE CRAFTSMANSHIP
OF RONNIE RUIZ. WHITE WALL TIRES ARE
NOT A NEW CONCEPT. WHITEWALL OR WHITE
SIDEWALL TIRES WERE VERY POPULAR FROM THE 1920s
TO ABOUT THE 1970s. ACCORDING TO RUIZ, THE WHITEWALL
IS ALIVE AND WELL TODAY. BY ME GOING OUT TO CAR
SHOWS AND CAR AUCTIONS OR EVEN LOCAL TIRE SHOPS, I
HAVE REALIZED THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT WANT
THAT CUSTOM LOOK. RUIZ HAS WORKED OVER
THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS PERFECTING HIS BUSINESS,
BOTH THE PAINT HE APPLIES AND THE TOOLS HE USES. I HAVE A MACHINE THAT
ALLOWS ME TO CREATE A COLOR SIDEWALL FROM A
BLACK WALL TIRE, AND THAT COULD BE CUSTOM. IT
COULD BE ANY COLOR. IT COULD MATCH THE
COLOR OF THE CAR. HIS BUSINESS IS CALLED
KUSTOM TYRES & SUPPLIES. AND HIS PASSION IS
PAINTING THAT WHITE WALL STRIPE ON ANY TIRE. AND EXPANDING
HIS BUSINESS. AND THAT’S WHERE MARICOPA
COMMUNITY COLLEGES CAME INTO THE RONNIE
RUIZ BIG PICTURE. RUIZ WAS TAKING BUSINESS
CLASSES AT ESTRELLA MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
AND WAS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN A PROGRAM
HOSTED BY GATEWAY’S CENTER FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL
INNOVATION AND A CHANCE TO WIN $20,000 IN CASH FOR
HIS START-UP BUSINESS. MARICOPA BUSINESS
STUDENTS ALONG WITH RUIZ PARTICIPATED IN A 5-WEEK
PODER PROGRAM SUPPORTED BY A GRANT FROM THE CISCO
CORPORATE ADVISED FUND AT SILICON VALLEY
COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO
EMPOWER BUSINESS STUDENTS. TO EXPOSE THEM TO TOOLS
THAT ALLOW THEM TO REALLY TAKE A BUSINESS IDEA,
VALIDATE THAT BUSINESS IDEA AND POTENTIALLY
CONSIDER HOW THEY CAN MAKE THAT BUSINESS
IDEA A REALITY. IT’S REALLY REWARDING TO
SEE THEM GO FROM LIKE I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT A
PITCH IS TO OH, MY GOD I’M PITCHING FOR MONEY AND I’VE
ACTUALLY WON A PRIZE. RUIZ SAYS THE STUDENTS
WORKED CLOSELY WITH INSTRUCTORS AND MENTORS AS THEY
PREPARED FOR THEIR BIG PITCH. AND IT WAS VERY INVOLVED. HOW WE WERE GOING TO GET
STARTED, WHAT’S THE MAIN SERVICE THAT WE’RE
PROVIDING, HOW ARE WE DIFFERENT, WHAT’S OUR PLAN
FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS? BUT IT ALSO GIVES THEM
THE OPPORTUNITY AND THE EXPERIENCE OF PITCHING
THEIR IDEA, BECAUSE THEY’RE GOING TO HAVE
TO DO THAT FOR POTENTIAL INVESTORS IN THE FUTURE. RUIZ WON THE FIRST
EVER BIG PITCH. AND AT A RECENT ESTRELLA
LEADERSHIP MEETING, HE PRESENTED TO THE FACULTY
AND ADMINISTRATION HIS BUSINESS CONCEPT. I DEVELOPED AN
ENTREPRENEURIAL MINDSET, WHICH I WANTED TO CHANGE
MY FAMILY’S TREE, BUT I JUST DIDN’T HAVE THE
SKILLS AND THE RESOURCES TO START MY OWN BUSINESS. THESE STUDENTS ARE GETTING
CONNECTED INTO THE PHOENIX BUSINESS ECOSYSTEM AND
REFERRALS ARE HAPPENING AND YOU SHOULD
SEE THIS PERSON. AND THAT’S WHERE SO MUCH
OF THE JUICE COMES FROM. THE $20,000 RUIZ WON WILL
BE USED FOR HIS BUSINESS AND HE LOOKS TO THE
FUTURE AND A DREAM THAT IS CLEARLY TAKING SHAPE. BIG PITCH ORGANIZERS
SAY THAT THE PROGRAM’S INAUGURAL YEAR WAS A HUGE
SUCCESS AND HOPE THAT NEXT YEAR WILL EVEN BE BETTER
AS THEY HELP SOMEONE LIKE RONNIE RUIZ FULFILL
THEIR DREAM. RENE BLATTE REPORTING
FOR MARICOPA NOW. STUDENTS AT MESA COMMUNITY
COLLEGE ARE MAKING THEIR BUSINESS DREAMS BECOME A
REALITY THROUGH A UNIQUE NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH THE
MESA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. ELIZABETH ECKEL
HAS THE STORY. MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND
MESA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RECENTLY PARTNERED TO
CREATE GREEN FLAG MESA. A BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
CENTER FOR STUDENTS OF MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
WHO ARE READY TO LAUNCH BUSINESSES BUT DON’T HAVE
THE RESOURCES TO DO SO. IT’S AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US
TO SHARE SOME OF THE SPACE THAT WE ACQUIRED WHEN WE
MOVED INTO THE DOWNTOWN MCC CAMPUS WITH STARTUP
BUSINESSES COMING OUT OF THE BUSINESS DEPARTMENT AT MCC. GREEN FLAG IS INTENDED TO
GIVE THEM NOT NECESSARILY THE CAPITAL BUT CERTAINLY
THE RESOURCES AND KNOWLEDGE OF PROFESSIONALS
WHO ARE ALREADY IN THE INDUSTRY THROUGH
MENTORSHIP, THROUGH ASSISTANCE, THROUGH THE MESA
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SO THAT THEY CAN ACTUALLY
START THOSE BUSINESSES THAT THEY’RE
READY TO LAUNCH. THE WORKSPACE CAN HOLD UP
TO 10 SMALL BUSINESSES FOR UP TO A YEAR. QUALIFIED STUDENTS RENT
THE SPACE FOR A MODEST $10. THEY HAVE TO BE A
CURRENT STUDENT AT MCC. THEY SHOULD BE ENROLLED OR
HAVE ALREADY ATTENDED SOME OF THE GENERAL BUSINESS
CLASSES SO THEY HAVE SOME BUSINESS ACUMEN. THEY HAVE TO HAVE A BUSINESS
IDEA THAT IS FULLY DEVELOPED. GREEN FLAG MESA IS HELPING
STUDENTS BRING THEIR BUSINESS VENTURES TO LIFE. IT’S JUST A GREAT
EXPERIENCE TO JUST COME IN AND SEE OTHER PEOPLE
WORKING ON THEIR LIFE’S TASK OR THEIR GOALS, AND
EVERYTHING LIKE THAT. SO IT’S JUST INSPIRING. HAVING THE FLEXIBILITY AND
FREEDOM THAT COMES WITH BEING MY OWN BUSINESS
OWNER, IT’S A REALLY BIG STEP TOWARDS THE FUTURE. IT REALLY HELPS CREATE A
PROFESSIONALISM THAT ISN’T QUITE ACHIEVABLE WHEN YOU
DON’T HAVE THE NECESSARY RESOURCES TO DO THAT. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT GREEN
FLAG MESA VISIT MESACC.EDU. FOR MARICOPA NOW,
I’M ELIZABETH ECKEL. COMING UP ON MARICOPA NOW:
HIS TALENT IN THE KITCHEN HAS EARNED HIM A PLACE IN
THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT. MEET THIS MARICOPA
COLLEGES GRADUATE. WHETHER IT’S A HEART
ATTACK, A DROWNING OR AN ACCIDENT, FIRST RESPONDERS
MUST BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING. AT MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
GRADUATING PARAMEDIC STUDENTS GAIN REAL
WORLD EXPERIENCE THROUGH SIMULATED SCENARIOS WHERE
THEY LEARN TO HANDLE BOTH THE MEDICAL AND EMOTIONAL
ELEMENTS OF AN EMERGENCY. DEE ANN KINKADE
BRINGS US THE STORY. LARSON, HEY! MA’AM, MA’AM. HEY, EVERYTHING’S FINE.
I’M NOT SUFFOCATING HIM. I JUST WANT TO
BE BY MY SON. ARE YOU THE PARENTS? ARE YOU
THE MOTHER AND THE DAD? YES. YEAH. WHAT’S GOING ON? OKAY. WE’RE TAKING CARE
OF HIM RIGHT NOW. HE’S, HE’S BREATHING
ON HIS OWN. OKAY. THE SCENE YOU ARE WATCHING
IS ONLY SIMULATED. WHAT DID YOU DO? ARE YOU
KIDDING ME? PAY YOU FOR WHAT? KILLING MY KID? PARAMEDIC STUDENTS RESPOND
TO A SIMULATED PEDIATRIC DROWNING TO EXPERIENCE THE
STRESS OF THE EMERGENCY. HE’S OBVIOUSLY
NOT BREATHING. HE’S OBVIOUSLY
NOT RESPONSIVE. CAN I JUST BE BY MY SON? I JUST WANT TO
STAND NEXT TO HIM. THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE
WORKING ON AND WE NEED TO GIVE THEM ROOM
TO WORK ON THAT. EVERY YEAR MESA COMMUNITY
COLLEGE HOSTS A TWO-DAY EVENT CALLED THE IMMERSIVE TOTAL
PATIENT MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE. PARAMEDIC STUDENTS, WHO
ARE CLOSE TO GRADUATION, RECEIVE ADDITIONAL
TRAINING THROUGH THESE REAL-LIFE SCENARIOS. THE MCC THEATER AND FILM
DEPARTMENT PROVIDES ACTING TALENT AND REALISTIC
MAKE-UP INCLUDING WOUNDS, BLOOD, GUTS AND EVEN
SIMULATED ALLERGIC REACTIONS. OUR ADVANCED MAKEUP
STUDENTS ACTUALLY ARE IN CHARGE OF CREATING WHAT
THE SCENARIO IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE AND THEY BUILD
ALL THE PROSTHETICS. (SPEAKING SPANISH) STUDENTS FROM THE MCC
PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AS
THEY RENDER EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. THEY ADD GRITTY REALITY
TO THE SCENARIO AS THEY RESTRAIN A MOTHER WHOSE
TEENAGE SON HAS SHOT HIMSELF. OUR JOB AS A CARE TEAM
IS TO GO AND KINDA OFFER COMFORT TO HER BUT ALSO
IMPORTANT IS TO KEEP THE PEOPLE AWAY FROM THE PARAMEDICS
SO THEY CAN DO THEIR JOB. THE SCENARIOS CONTINUE TO
PLAY OUT AS THE PATIENT IS THEN TRANSPORTED TO A
HOSPITAL BAY WHERE MCC NURSING STUDENTS
ARE WAITING. THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE
SCENARIOS WILL BE ABOUT TODAY. BUT THEY ARE DRESSED AND
PREPARED LIKE ANY NORMAL CLINICAL SETTING. IT’S GOOD. SO THE IV THAT THE
PARAMEDICS PUT IN THE FIELD IS STILL WORKING. GOOD. I’M GOING TO GO AHEAD
AND PUSH OUR MORPHINE. INSTRUCTORS SAY THIS
EXPERIENCE BUILDS THE STUDENT’S CONFIDENCE. IT HELPS THEM FOR THEIR
JOBS AND THEY’RE MORE LIKELY TO GET HIRED. EACH TEAM IS DEBRIEFED
AFTER A SCENARIO. HOW YOU SPREAD YOUR
CREW OUT WAS EXCELLENT. WE LOVE TO SEE THAT. YOU GUYS HAD EVERYBODY
IN THE RIGHT PLACE. MCC STUDENTS CAN BECOME
A PARAMEDIC IN JUST TWO YEARS AND GRADUATE WITH
AN ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE. MEDICAL EDUCATORS SAY THIS
COMPREHENSIVE TRAINING MODEL PREPARES FUTURE
FIRST RESPONDERS FOR A LONG AND REWARDING CAREER. I’M DEE ANN KINKADE
REPORTING FOR MARICOPA NOW. THE DEDICATION AND PASSION
ONE SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE MUSIC STUDENT HAS
BROUGHT TO PLAYING THE SAXOPHONE HAS EARNED HIM THE
GEORGE BENSON SCHOLARSHIP. JONATHAN HIGUERA INTRODUCES US
TO THIS TALENTED MUSICIAN. JOSEPH THOMAS IS A FIXTURE
AROUND THE SCC MUSIC BUILDING, PLAYING IN JAZZ
ENSEMBLES AND GENERALLY BEING AN OPEN, ACCESSIBLE
GUY PEOPLE CAN TALK TO. BUT IT WAS HIS DEDICATION,
DEVOTION, AND DRIVE TO MASTER HIS SAXOPHONE AND
HIS CLASSWORK THAT LED HIM TO BEING SELECTED THIS
YEAR’S WINNER OF THE GEORGE BENSON
SCHOLARSHIP WINNER. I HAVE FINALLY REALIZED
WITHIN MYSELF THAT I HAVE A SENSE OF DISCIPLINE THAT I
DIDN’T THINK I HAD BEFORE. HE’S EXCELLED IN JUST
ABOUT EVERYTHING IN SCHOOL, PLAYING IN JAZZ
ENSEMBLES AND ORCHESTRAS, ALL WHILE CARRYING
A 3.8 GPA. HE LOVES PLAYING
IMPROVISED JAZZ, AND COUNTS THE LATE CHARLIE
PARKER AND JOHN COLTRANE AS BIG MUSICAL INFLUENCES,
BUT HE’S ALSO INTERESTED IN MANY GENRES OF MUSIC, INCLUDING
ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC. I REALLY THINK IT’S A
WEIRD INSTRUMENT, BEING AN ADULT NOW AND LOOKING AT IT. BUT I’VE BEEN PLAYING IT
FOR SO LONG NOW THAT IT’S DISCIPLINED ME AND IT’S
BECOME PART OF MY DAILY LIFE. HE BEGAN PLAYING THE SAX
IN THE FIFTH GRADE AT THE URGING OF HIS GRANDMOTHER. SHE LOVED SMOOTH JAZZ AND
WANTED HIM TO BECOME THE NEXT KENNY G. THOMAS WAS ON BOARD FOR
A WHILE BUT WHEN HE HEARD PARKER AND COLTRANE, AND
IT REIGNITED HIS LOVE FOR IMPROVISED JAZZ. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A CERTAIN
PERSONALITY TO BE A GOOD JAZZ MUSICIAN. YOU HAVE TO BE
WILLING TO TAKE CHANCES AND LET IT ALL HANG OUT THERE. HE’S GOT NO PROBLEM WITH THAT. THOMAS ALMOST DIDN’T
FOLLOW HIS CALLING. HE FIRST WENT TO ASU
TO PURSUE A SOFTWARE ENGINEERING DEGREE, BUT HE
LEFT THAT PROGRAM AND WAS WORKING A JOB. THEN HE HEARD A SONG ON
THE RADIO THAT INSPIRED HIM. THAT MOMENT IN THE CAR
WAS PROBABLY ACTUALLY THE MOMENT I DECIDED I NEED
TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL. I NEED TO STUDY JAZZ. THIS IS WHAT I
NEED TO BE DOING. IT DIDN’T TAKE LONG FOR HIM TO
REALIZE HE’D RATHER PLAY MUSICAL NOTES THAN LEARN CODE. HE REASSESSED AND DECIDED
TO LOOK UP HIS OLD SAXOPHONE COACH, ERIC
RASMUSSEN, WHO HE HAD MET WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL. HE KNOWS THAT THIS IS WHAT
HE’S SUPPOSED TO DO, YOU KNOW. AS SCARY AS IT IS TO BE A
MUSICIAN IN THIS DAY AND AGE IN TERMS OF ECONOMICS
AND THE COMPETITION OUT THERE, HE KNOWS THAT, I
THINK, TO TRULY BE HAPPY, HE NEEDS TO EMBRACE WHAT
HE’S GOOD AT AND WHAT HE’S PASSIONATE ABOUT. HIS INSTRUCTORS AGREE
HIS SMARTS, DRIVE, AND COMMITMENT WILL HELP
PROPEL HIM IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WHETHER AS A
PERFORMER, EDUCATOR OR BOTH. I CAN SEE HIM DOING A
COMBINATION OF THINGS, NOT ONLY BEING A PERFORMING MUSICIAN
BUT MAYBE EVEN AN EDUCATOR. THOMAS ALREADY WORKS
PART-TIME WITH THE CAMPO VERDE HIGH SCHOOL BAND,
INSPIRING JAZZ STUDENTS THERE. NOW HE PLANS TO TAKE TIME
TO FIGURE OUT HIS FUTURE PATH AFTER HE GRADUATES
THIS MAY FROM SCC. SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY
COLLEGE HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BEST THINGS TO
EVER HAPPEN IN MY LIFE. I REALLY HIGHLY APPRECIATE
ALL MY MENTORS HERE. THEY’VE ALL CHANGED MY
LIFE IN THEIR OWN SPECIAL WAY, EACH OF THEM. HEY FOODIES, LISA HERE. AND IT’S TIME TO GO INSIDE THE
ART OF ICE CREAM IN SCOTTSDALE. AND IT’S ALL IN THE NAME. WE’RE HERE WITH THE SCC
CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM TO GET THE INSIDE SCOOP. IF YOU HAVE A SWEET TOOTH
THAN CHEF THERESE LUDWIG YOU ARE OUR BEST FRIEND,
YOU ARE MY BEST FRIEND, RIGHT? YES, ABSOLUTELY! SO TODAY WE ARE GOING TO
MAKE A MESSY SUNDAE. WE ARE GOING TO
MAKE BANANAS FOSTER. YOU HAVE A GOOD
CONNECTION WITH SCC? ABSOLUTELY, I WAS A FORMER
STUDENT AT SCC AND NOW I’M AN INSTRUCTOR FOR
THEIR EVENING PROGRAM. THE CULINARY PROGRAM IS
SO HANDS-ON AND I WOULDN’T WANT TO GO ANYWHERE ELSE. IT’S ALWAYS A SURPRISE. HERE ARE THE INGREDIENTS
FOR YOUR BANANAS FOSTER ICE CREAM MESSY SUNDAE:
BROWN SUGAR, ICE CREAM, FRESH BANANAS. WE’RE GOING TO THROW SOME
BUTTER INTO THIS PAN, GET THAT MELTING DOWN.
THAT’S GOT A NICE MELT. LET US GO AHEAD AND SCOOP
IN SOME OF THE BROWN SUGAR. FEEL IT SIZZLING
IT’S GETTING HOT. LET’S DO ANOTHER CHUNK,
KIND OF LIKE THAT. IS THERE A CERTAIN TECHNIQUE TO
BREAKING THE BROWN SUGAR? NOT LEAVING IT OUT LONG IS
DEFINITELY THE BEST PART OF BROWN SUGAR NOT
GETTING HARDENED. WE ARE GOING TO GET THAT
MELTED, GET ALL THAT BUTTER INCORPORATED. IT SMELLS SO GOOD. WE ARE MAKING OUR
CARAMEL BASE RIGHT NOW. I’M GOING TO DO A COUPLE
SWIRLS OF THE PAN AND THEN I’M GOING TO HAVE YOU
ADD IN SOME HEAVY CRÈME. PERFECT. RIGHT THERE. ALL RIGHT, WE ARE GOING TO
DO THE SAME THING AND GET THAT ALL SWIRLED IN. WHOA, ADD THE FLAMES! BANANA TIME. I LIKE THAT! I LIKE BANANAS SO JUST
PUT THEM ALL IN THERE. THAT MADE IT EASY FOR ME. DO I GET TO USE
THE BIG SPOON? YOU CAN USE THE BIG SPOON. I GET TO USE THE BIG SPOON RIGHT
HERE FOR THE BANANAS. WE ARE GOING TO GET THAT
CARAMEL SAUCE COATED EVENLY ON TOP OF THOSE. DO I NEED TO LIKE
SCOOP THE SAUCE AROUND? YEAH, YOU CAN SCOOP IT. YEAH, WE’RE JUST LOOKING
FOR THE CARAMEL TO CANDY ON THE OUTSIDE OF THOSE. NOW, COMES THE FUN PART. WE ARE GOING
TO ADD THE RUM. SO WE’RE GOING TO STEP BACK A
BIT AND TURN THIS FLAME ON HIGH. FLAMBÉING! YES, ADDS A
LITTLE TOUCH TO IT. SO WE POUR IT TOWARDS
THE EDGE OF OUR PAN. WE WANT A GOOD AMOUNT
AND THEN WE ARE GOING TO IGNITE. WOW. SO THIS IS SOMETHING YOU
DEFINITELY NEED TO BE CAREFUL WITH WHEN
DOING AT HOME. YES, DEFINITELY
BE CAREFUL. ABSOLUTELY. HOW OFTEN DO YOU
DO THIS AT HOME? I LIKE TO DO IT
QUITE FREQUENTLY. IF I’M HAVING ICE CREAM
— HOW DO YOU KEEP THAT FIGURE IF YOU’RE DOING THAT A LOT?
YOU MOVE AROUND A LOT, YOU KNOW. OF COURSE, I
ALREADY MADE A MESS. THAT’S OKAY. THIS IS A
MESSY SUNDAE. OH, YEAH. HENCE,
THE NAME, RIGHT? SO FIRST THING WE GOT
OUR ICE CREAM NICE AND SOFTENED. I ALWAYS LET MY ICE CREAM
SIT OUT FOR ABOUT YOU KNOW SEVEN TO TEN MINUTES AND
THEN IT GETS NICE AND SOFT AND WE’RE GOING TO SCOOP THAT IN
THERE, JUST LET IT DROP DOWN. YES, BIG SPOON TIME. BIG SPOON. NOW IT’S FOR THE
BANANAS FOSTER. YEAH, GO AHEAD SCOOP SOME
OF THOSE BANANAS RIGHT THERE ON TOP OF
THAT ICE CREAM. ARE YOU GUYS READY
FOR THIS ONE? BECAUSE I KNOW I AM. THIS IS THE GOOD PART. THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN
GET NICE AND MELTY. YOU SEE THE CARAMEL KIND
OF SOAKING DOWN INTO THE ICE CREAM GONG
DON ON THE SIDES. EVERYTHING. I SAY THAT EVERY SUNDAE
HAS TO HAVE CHOCOLATE. OH, CHOC-A-HOLIC
RIGHT HERE. BECAUSE IT MAKES US HAPPY. THAT’S THE CHERRY ON TOP. AND THERE IS NO BETTER WAY
TO COOL OFF THAN WITH A SWEET TREAT LIKE THIS. STUDENTS FROM THE MARICOPA
COMMUNITY COLLEGES ARE MAKING THEIR
DREAMS A REALITY. THEIR ART WILL BE
SHOWCASED IN AN ART COMPETITION CALLED
ARTISTS OF PROMISE. WELCOME TO SPIRIT
OF THE ARTS. I’M YOU’RE HOST
ANDREA ZAKRZEWSKI. THE TOP STUDENTS FROM
THE MARICOPA COMMUNITY COLLEGES RECEIVE AWARDS
AND ARE SHOWCASED IN THE AREAS OF CREATIVE WRITING,
DANCE, CHOREOGRAPHY, FILM MEDIA ARTS, MUSIC,
THEATER, AND VISUAL ARTS. THIS COMPETITION
GIVES THESE STUDENTS A REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE OF
WHAT IT’S LIKE TO PREFORM IN FRONT OF PEOPLE IN
A TOP VENUE LIKE THE HERBERGER THEATER. THE STUDENTS ARE JUDGED BY
PROFESSIONALS IN THE COMMUNITY. IT’S LIKE THE OSCARS,
GRAMMY’S, AND TONY’S ALL ROLLED INTO ONE BIG GALA. CHANCELLOR MARIA
HARPER-MARINICK OPENED UP THE CEREMONY. TO CELEBRATE THE ARTS AND
TO CELEBRATE THE AMAZING TALENT. THE FIRST PLACE AWARD FOR
MALE VOCALIST GOES TO JAMES ZIERVOGEL. I’LL BE PERFORMING THE
“OLD RED HILLS” FROM “PARADE” AND ALSO “THE
MAN INSIDE THE CLUES” FROM “CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.” MY WHOLE APPROACH WITH PREFORMING AND SINGING
REALLY IN GENERAL IS THAT IT’S IMPORTANT TO EMOTE
THE HUMAN EMOTIONS AND REALLY CONNECTING WITH THE
FEELINGS OF WHAT HUMANS FEEL. YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THERE’S
SO MANY EMOTIONS THAT EVERYONE FEELS AND MUSIC
HAS THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO TRY AND CAPTURE EVERY
SINGLE ONE OF THOSE EMOTIONS. JAMES BELIEVES THE QUALITY
INSTRUCTION HE RECEIVED HELPED HIM TO GET TO
THIS POINT IN HIS CAREER. DR. CATHY HAUAN IS ONE
OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL TEACHERS I’VE HAD THE
PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH. SHE HAS REALLY HELPED ME
WITH KIND OF FIGURING OUT JUST HOW TO BE A
BETTER PERFORMER. HIS PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
ARE TO GET AN ASSOCIATE’S DEGREE AND TRANSFER TO
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND JOIN THEIR
MUSIC INDUSTRY PROGRAM. CONNER WILSON WON FOR
SOLO INSTRUMENTAL GUITAR. HE’LL BE PLAYING A
“PRELUDE TO BACH.” I LOVE PLAYING GUITAR BECAUSE
IT’S JUST BECOME A PART OF ME AT THIS TIME. IT’S
JUST AN EXTENSION OF MY VOICE AND WHAT I
WANT TO EXPRESS. I LOVE THE FACULTY THERE,
AND I HAVE COMPLETE FAITH IN THEM AND THEY GO OUT OF THEIR
WAY TO DO SO MUCH FOR ME. CONNER’S DREAM IS
TO BE A MUSIC TEACHER. HE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A
GREAT IMPACT ON STUDENTS AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE
IN THEIR LIVES. HE HAS SOME ADVICE FOR
ASPIRING GUITARISTS. REACH OUT TO OTHER PEOPLE
AND HAVE THEM HELP YOU AND GET ACQUAINTED
WITH THE GUITAR. THE PROGRAM AT GLENDALE
COMMUNITY, GCC GUITAR, IS A REALLY GREAT PLACE
TO GET STARTED. WINNERS OF THE VISUAL ARTS
WERE ON EXHIBITION IN THE LOBBY OF THE HERBERGER. FIVE OF THE PIECES WILL
BE SELECTED TO GO ON TO A NATIONAL EXHIBITION. CATEGORIES ON DISPLAY
INCLUDE CERAMICS, OIL, PAINTINGS, AND PHOTOGRAPHY. ERIC PETA WON HONORABLE
MENTION FOR VISUAL ART. HE DESCRIBES ONE OF HIS
STONEWARE CERAMIC WORKS. IT IS AN AGING VESSEL
FOR HONEY WINE. IT IS CALLED NEED. ERIC INCORPORATES HIS
SKILL S AS A TATTOO ARTIST INTO HIS ARTWORK. FOR ME, BEING A TATTOO
ARTIST HAS INFLUENCED MY OTHER WORKS OF ART IN A
WAY THAT ALL THE STROKES ARE VERY PRECISE, VERY
DELIBERATE, AND EVERY MOVEMENT OF MY HAND IS
COMPLETELY CONTROLLED. HE HAS FEW SUGGESTIONS
FOR ARTISTS. IT’S THE MORE OF YOURSELF
THAT YOU CAN PUT INTO A WORK OF ART THE BETTER IT
WILL BE THAN BEING ABLE TO EXPRESS YOURSELF
THROUGH A MEDIUM. THE AWARD FOR MEDIA ARTS
WERE GIVEN TO STUDENTS IN CATEGORIES SUCH AS
DOCUMENTARY AND ANIMATION. FOR DOCUMENTARY DRAMA
ZOE WANG FROM GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE. THE MARICOPA COMMUNITY
COLLEGES CONTINUE TO INSPIRE AND SUPPORT
ASPIRING ARTISTS TO MAKE THEIR DREAMS COME TRUE. CLASSES IN THE PERFORMING
AND VISUAL ARTS ARE OFFERED FOR ALL SKILL
LEVELS FOR BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE AND
ADVANCE LEVELS. MAKE YOUR DREAM OF BEING
AN ARTIST A REALITY. CHECK OUT CLASSES THROUGH
THE MARICOPA COMMUNITY COLLEGES BY GOING
TO MARICOPA.EDU. THANKS FOR JOINING US ON THIS
EDITION OF SPIRIT OF THE ARTS. I’M ANDREA ZAKRZEWSKI. STUDENTS AND FACULTY AT
MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE ARE BUILDING A UNIQUE LIVING
LABORATORY AND UNLIKE OTHER PROGRAMS ON CAMPUS
THIS ONE HAS NO WALLS JUST LOTS OF SUNSHINE
AND FRESH AIR. BRANDON NEUMAN SHOWS US
HOW IT’S MAKING THE CAMPUS BETTER FOR EVERYONE. LUSH GRASS, ABUNDANT
BLOSSOMS, NEARLY 100 SPECIES OF TREES, AND 80
TYPES OF CACTI PAINT A PICTURESQUE LANDSCAPE
THROUGHOUT MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S CAMPUS. THERE’S A REASON WE
ALL STAND IN THE SHADE. TREES PROVIDE A BENEFICIAL
ENVIRONMENT FOR US. A TEAM OF DEDICATED
FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND STAFF TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN
MAINTAINING THE GARDENS AND LANDSCAPES THAT
LINE MCC’S WALKWAYS. TO ME, IT’S JUST SO
REWARDING TO PLANT A SEED OR PLANT SOMETHING IN THE
GROUND WHEN IT’S A COUPLE FEET TALL AND IT WOULD BE
NEAT TO COME BACK WITH MY KIDS AND HOPEFULLY
GRANDKIDS IN THE FUTURE AND BE LOOKING AT A TREE,
A MASSIVE 50-FOOT TREE AND SAY, “YOU KNOW I PLANTED THAT,
OR YOUR GRANDPA PLANTED THAT.” SO I THINK BEING PART OF
IT DOES KIND OF CREATE A LEGACY. THROUGH THEIR HARD WORK,
THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY AT MCC ARE NOW CELEBRATING
A SPECIAL ACCREDITATION. MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE IS
NOW ONE OF FOUR COMMUNITY COLLEGES ACROSS THE
UNITED STATES THAT IS AN ACCREDITED ARBORETUM. WITH MCC BEING THE ONLY
COLLEGE CAMPUS IN THE STATE WITH ARBORNET
SANCTIONING STUDENTS CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VALUABLE
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES. ALL THE TREES ARE BEING
MEASURED AND THAT DATA IS BEING RECORDED. THAT’S HELPFUL NOT ONLY
FOR OUR STUDENTS, BUT THAT DATA WILL BE AVAILABLE
FOR OTHER COUNTRIES, OTHER STATES TO KIND OF SEE AND
TRACK WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH OUR TREES. SO THEY ARE MEASURING THE
DIAMETER, THE HEIGHT, THE CANOPY AND THAT WILL
BE DONE BY THE CLASS AS SPECIAL PROJECTS. AND THEN
EVERY COUPLE YEARS THEY’LL GO AND MEASURE THEM AGAIN. INSTRUCTORS SAY THAT THE
ARBORETUM STATUS PROVIDES A LASTING BENEFIT
TO THE COMMUNITY. THIS IS A TRUE ASSET
FOR THE CAMPUS AND THE STUDENTS TO HAVE SO MANY
BEAUTIFUL TREES WHERE THEY CAN COME AND STUDY WHERE
YOU HAVE A COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE FOR
RESIDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE CITY TO COME HERE FOR
DIFFERENT EVENTS AND FESTIVALS. AN INTERACTIVE WEBSITE AT
MESACC.EDU/ARBORETUM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED SO THE
PUBLIC CAN LEARN ABOUT THE PLANTS ON MCC’S CAMPUS. THE ARBORETUM STATUS I
THINK IN THE LONG RUN WILL MAKE MCC A MUCH
BETTER SCHOOL. REPORTING FROM MESA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOR MARICOPA NOW, I’M
BRANDON NEUMAN. MCTV HAS BEEN FOLLOWING
A FORMER MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT WHO
IS RECEIVING NATIONAL RECOGNITION ON A POPULAR
HIT SHOW ON THE FOOD NETWORK. LISA ACQUAFREDDA HAS THIS
STUDENT SUCCESS STORY. YOU MAY RECALL
MCTV’S CHEF’S MENU. WE COOKED WITH CHEF ADAM,
OWNER AND OPERATOR OF HANDLEBAR DINER
IN EAST MESA. HE’S ALSO A FORMER MESA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT. AND YOU’VE CREATED A LOT
OF WHERE YOU ARE TODAY FROM YOUR COMMUNITY
COLLEGE EXPERIENCE? MCTV HAS BEEN KEEPING
AN EYE ON HIS SUCCESS. THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING OUT. IT
SERIOUSLY MEANS A LOT TO ME. ALL IN ONE YEAR, HE’S
OPENED UP HANDLEBAR DINER. HE’S OPENED UP
A FOOD TRUCK. HE’S COOKED WITH GUY
FIERI AT THE SUPER BOWL. HE’S COOKED AT THE MASTERS
AND NOW THERE’S THIS… HE’S ON CHOPPED. LET’S MEET A NEW GROUP OF
HOPEFULS FIRST HERE’S CHEF ADAM ALLISON. IT WAS CRAZY. YOU KNOW, STARTING
OUT IN THE CULINARY WORLD CHOPPED WAS ALWAYS ONE OF THE
SHOWS I ALWAYS WATCHED. WE ALWAYS WATCHED
EVERY EPISODE LIKE WHAT WOULD I DO?
WHAT WOULD I DO? TO ACTUALLY BE ON THE SET AND DO
IT ALL, IT WAS KIND OF SURREAL. FOR THE PREMIERE, HANDLEBAR
DINER WAS PACKED WITH FANS. IT HAS BEEN FUN TO HAVE
THIS MANY PEOPLE COME AND CELEBRATE WITH HIM. EVERYBODY IN THIS
NEIGHBORHOOD LOVES HIM AND NOW EVERYBODY CAN SEE EVEN
JUST IN ARIZONA CAN SEE HOW FAR HE HAS COME. MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
IS PROUD OF CHEF ADAM. WE LOVE CHEF ADAM’S STORY. IT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE
FOR FACULTY MEMBERS TO HEAR THEIR STUDENTS
HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL. CHEF ADAM IS HUMBLED BY
THE OUTPOUR OF LOVE AND SAYS THE EXPERIENCE
WAS UNREAL. YOU START AT 6 O’CLOCK
IN THE MORNING. YOU MEET AT MCDONALDS IN
HARLEM AND THEN THEY WALK YOU TO SOME BUILDING AND YOU
FINISH LIKE 8 O’CLOCK AT NIGHT. THE ACTUAL SHOW TOOK
16 HOURS TO FILM. ONE VERY LONG DAY. CHEF ADAM BELIEVES SUCCESS
STARTS WITH EDUCATION. MCC HELPED ME GET TO THAT
POINT FROM ALL THE CLASSES FROM MARKETING,
ADVERTISING, EVEN FINANCE AND STUFF LIKE THAT, STUFF
I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW. AND IF I DIDN’T TAKE THOSE
CLASSES, I WOULD BE IN THE DARK. YOU CAN COOK THE BEST
FOOD IN THE WORLD, BUT IF THERE’S NO ONE THERE TO
EAT IT — YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO GET PEOPLE
IN YOUR FRONT DOOR. WE FOCUS ON PRACTICAL
KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION IN
OUR CLASSES. AND WE LOVE TO SEE OUR
STUDENTS BE SUCCESSFUL AND BE AN INSPIRATION TO BOTH
STUDENTS AND FACULTY. IT DEFINITELY GIVES ME
SOME INSPIRATION TO KNOW THAT I CAN HAVE A BIG DREAM AND
IT CAN BECOME A REALITY. DO YOU THINK YOU WON? I HOPE SO BUT
YOU NEVER KNOW. DID CHEF ADAM’S DREAM OF
WINNING CHOPPED COME TRUE? CHEF ADAM HAD WON! THE CHEERS CONTINUED. CONGRATULATIONS CHEF
ADAM OF HANDLEBAR DINER! FOR MARICOPA NOW,
I’M LISA ACQUAFREDDA. WE ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE
ANOTHER MARICOPA GRADUATE WILL BE ON A FUTURE
SEGMENT OF CHOPPED. KEEP AN EYE OUT
TO SEE WHO IT IS. AND THAT’S OUR SHOW. I HOPE
YOU’VE ENJOYED IT. BE SURE TO STAY TUNED TO
