Panforte is a traditional Sienese sweet. It was flavored with honey fruit and spices. Fruit rotting gave the bread a
sour flavor (“fortis” in Latin) which is supposed to be the
origin of the name “panforte”. However, at that time it was called
“honied bread” or “peppered bread”. Originally, more than a dessert
it was actually a medicine created by the “speziali”
a kind of early pharmacist. There are legends about the panforte. According to one the Sienese army
used panforte as an energizer before the famous Montaperti battle in 1260 where they completely defeated the Florentines.
