So where we going today? Today, we are going to
Hot-Star in Pasadena for some chicken cutlets. Hot-Star came out of Shilin
Night Market in Taipei. This is the– the food
in Shilin Market, so. – [Melody] The food. – [Woman] Like, if anyone’s coming here, they need to have this. – [Melody] Their marketing pitch is “chicken cutlets bigger than your face” and they do, they’re massive. Are they actually bigger than your face? – [Melody] It depends
on how big your face is. (Serena laughs) But they’re pretty big. It’s really good.
Okay. Yeah, it’s a lot of chicken though. So, be prepared for that. Alright, let’s do this. (upbeat guitar music) Hello, your food is ready. Ooo.
Thank you, enjoy your meal. Thank you. – [Melody] Oh my gosh. (electro music) Gloves on.
Gloves on. Did they do this in Taiwan? Don’t you just get your hands messy? I have never used gloves to eat this. Never have to wash your
hands. You can just go at it. (Serena laughs) They should do this at every restaurant. Well, first of all, tell me about this. So you, this is the one you’ve had? Yes. And there’s always
a huge long line for it outside of Shilin Night Market. – [Serena] This is humongous. This is just giant chicken cutlet. (electro music) Oh my god, this is so good. I feel like I’m back in Taiwan. Is this spicy? It doesn’t taste like it. I think it’s just the spicy powder. It’s pretty mild.
Mhm. I actually grew up going
to the night market, where Hot-Star kind of originated and the line for this place.
It’s a stall, first of all. So it’s not an actual
restaurant. Super long lines. So it’s so crowded there
that if we were to separate, we would never find each other. I don’t really remember
fried chicken really being an item that people sought
out, before like, Hot-Star. What– what I didn’t know about is like, Taiwanese popcorn chicken.
This was a big thing in the night market.
– [Melody] Mhm, yeah. So, popcorn chicken is
something that they have here. I mean, you see it at like,
frickin’ KFC and stuff. But, the Taiwanese kind is sort of different, don’t you think? Ah, that is. I get the
breading is really different. It seems a little less greasy, actually. Yeah, definitely less greasy and the spiciness is not
within the popcorn chicken. It’s kind of like powdered on. (electro music) I have never seen this before. So this is the lotus root.
And, I’ve only seen it stir-fried or as like a cold
salad dish, sliced super thin. But this, they fry them up here. I don’t know why, but it
feels vaguely healthy, too. Even though it’s fried, which is unusual. (Melody laughs) That’s good.
It’s good. It’s exactly what I would
expect it to be. Right? It’s like crunchy and a
little bit sweet and earthy. Oh my god, this is so good. I can see the appeal of
having a night market where you can have a little bit of chicken and then getting like, ten other things. Yeah. I like that I got a little
taste of the night market. If you like this episode, click here for more Cult Following.
